This ability jumps out at me all the time. Just picked up a new book and had to vent because there were errors on pp. 9 and 13. Sometimes it allows me to be smug. But sometimes I am hesitant to point them out when they are publications I hold dear, as in the Sept/Oct.2009 edition of bookmarks magazine. I'll give you a hint. It's in the Book Showcase.
Does anyone else share this affliction?

Perhaps it is because I have read so many well-constructed sentences and paragraphs. Maybe it is because my job has often involved writing and editing and re-writing technical documents. In any case, errors scream loudly at me from the page. Awkward, tangled sentence structure, poor word usage, and sentence fragments correct themselves in my brain - to improve readability and ensure grammatical correctness. This has been a very useful attribute when I am re-writing a proposal. However, it is terribly distracting when an author and/or editor have been sloppy or clueless, and I have no power to fix the problems that I detect. Generally, I do not finish reading a book that has too many problems with its construction. There is a lot of beautiful writing out there to be savored.
So, I would say to "pinerivergirl" that this "talent" is a blessing and a curse, depending on the situation....

I, too, have this issue. I can't imagine that I pick up on every single error, as I have never been a fan of studying sentence structure, so when I notice something, it seems like it would be a pretty big thing. I like to think it is not the author's fault, but more a publishing error. I can usually forgive one mistake, but after that, I start ignoring the story and looking for more problems. The most error-filled book I have gotten through in recent months is Sing Them Home by Stephanie Kallos - and I happened to pick it up after reading something about one of the editors. Barf, barf, barf!

My friend doesn't have an email address. I used to send photos to their cell phone from mine as an MMS message. I just got the iphone 3G and can not figure out how to send photos to a phone#. I only see options for sending either an email or a text message (this option is text only & doesn't have an option for adding images). Is my days of sending photos from my phone to another over?

If you get frustrated by errors - both grammatical and/or content-related - stay far away from un-proofed advanced readers' copies! I am a book blogger/book reviewer, and I have to force myself not to pick up a red pen while reading some of these books! There has only been one time that I was so aghast at an error that I had to e-mail the publisher with the corrections. I was happy to see in the final copy that it was, in fact, edited out.
